Well, dear readers, I need your help. I've got a cross-country train trip coming up in a few days and I've spent the evening perusing my bookshelves and have managed to narrow down my selection to... eleven. Help me get it down to three. Please. Votes welcome (nay, required...) in comments below. Thanks.
1. Hard-boiled Wonderland & the End of the World / Haruki Murakami
2. The Appointment / Herta Muller
3. Dark Places / Gillian Flynn
4. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time / Mark Haddon
5. The Outlander / Gil Adamson
6. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil / John Berendt
7. September 11: West Coast Writers Approach Ground Zero (including the indomitable Susie Bright)
8. Little Bee / Chris Cleave
9. Brief Histroy of the Dead / Kevin Brockmeier
10. Columbine / Dave Cullen
11. Room / Emma Donoghue

I'm sorry. I have never read any of these. I thought I was a book nerd. Ooops...
Oh now Aimee, I bet you have opinions about books you haven't read! (You're too much like me not to... :) Amazon links provided for synopses! What would you want to read over the course of three days on Amtrak?
I've only read #4, and it was great! A very quick read though. Looked at the other books - I'd go with the #1 and perhaps #8. Keep in mind I'm judging the books by their covers (and brief synopses!). Have a great trip!!
I have not read any of these but Columbine looks like a good choice.
Of that list, I've only read Midnight in the Garden. It's ... ok. However, I don't think it would be a bad choice for travel reading.
Little Bee is a good read, but short for a fast reader. Slip it in as a fourth back-up? What a delicious opportunity to travel across country and read to your heat's content. Mmmmmmm....
